Description:

This program seeks to maximize the use of sport/physical activity as an educational intervention and social asset in order to enhance the wellness of girls as they navigate between childhood and early womanhood. The program provides $200,000 in financial assistance to sports and physical activity programs seeking to add new or expanded program participation opportunities for an under-served population of girls, particularly economically disadvantaged girls and/or girls from populations with high incidences of health-risk behaviors. Non-profit organizations must be able to deliver girls' sport/physical activity programming to girls in third to eighth grades.

Katrina Media Fellowships

Description:

The Open Society Institute has announced a fellowship competition in response to critical issues exposed by Hurricane Katrina. By supporting in-depth journalism and media projects, OSI aims to stimulate and sustain a national conversation on these issues. Twelve to fifteen fellows will receive between $15,000 and $35,000 to carry out projects in print, radio, photography, and documentary film and video production over the course of one year. Award amounts will cover a stipend and project expenses and will vary depending on the project duration, medium, and costs involved. The fellowship term begins June 15, 2006.

CPB Radio Program Fund

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has available approximately $7.3 million to invest in national programming projects in radio. Anyone is eligible to apply for funds. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has launched "Healthy Eating Research," a five-year, $16 million program to evaluate changes in policies and environments that can promote healthy eating among children. The program was created to build and strengthen evidence needed to halt the epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States and will fund research that identifies, analyzes, and evaluates environmental and policy approaches that promote healthy eating and prevent obesity among children, particularly in low-income and racial/ethnic communities where childhood obesity is most prevalent.

Purpose Prize For Older Social Innovators: Feb. 28, 2006 Deadline

Nominations are open for the Purpose Prize, five $100,000 investments in Americans over the age of sixty who are combining their passion, creativity, experience, and entrepreneurial skills to tackle issues of social significance. The program will also honor sixty semi-finalists ("60 at 60+") for their social innovations. To be eligible for the prize, the nominee must be at least 60 years old, a U.S. resident, and currently working in a leadership capacity in an organization or institution (public, private, nonprofit, or for-profit) to address a major social problem.
