Description:

When children with special needs are young, they sometimes require extra help to learn basic skills. There are several preschool programs, private and public, available to parents of special needs children in the Spokane area. But some of those programs are having trouble finding enough money to stay in business. In this “Growing Up Healthy” report, Spokane Public Radio's Doug Nadvornick visits one preschool in Cheney that's hoping this isn't its last year.

Radio Commentary by Dr. Kim Thorburn
Parents will do whatever they can to keep their children from getting sick
or hurt. Sometimes they do things that don't make sense, in the name of
protecting their kids. Commentator (and Spokane County Health Officer) Dr. Kim Thorburn urges parents to do more research before they make health
decisions based on emotion. (03:34)

KPBX/KSFC Developing Good Eating Habits — 3/14/03

Description:

by Doug Nadvornick
When babies are born, their diets are pretty simple, mostly mother's milk
or milk formulas. As they get older and become more able to chew, babies'
diets expand. Nutritionists say it's important for parents to help their
youngsters develop good eating habits. They say children with well-rounded
diets are more likely to eat well, and less likely to overeat, as adults.

School cafeterias, notoriously unpopular, have increased their a la carte snack foods and kids are getting more and more calories from what their parents would call "junk foods" and desserts.
WBEZ's Viviendo En Mi Mundo (Living In My Own World) introduces listeners to young Latinos who daily live with gang violence, racism, and lack of positive role models. By offering a disturbing portrait of a typical high school gang member struggling to make something more of his life, this youth produced-documentary—a joint project of WBEZ Chicago Public Radio and Radio Arte WRTE—gives voice to the challenges that at-risk Latinos in Chicagoland communities face.
