Understanding Your Partner's Challenges

Public radio faces unique challenges when participating in community partnerships. Conceptually, partnerships require public radio to provide services that are considered nontraditional for radio stations. Operationally, public radio's modestly-sized education/outreach departments often find it difficult to sustain labor-intensive, highly interdependent relationships.

Some common conflicts for broadcasters in community partnerships might include:

  • interdependence within the partnership vs. a need for station independence;
  • serving community needs vs. meeting internal operational demands; and
  • high community expectations vs. decreasing institutional resources and capacity.
