Healthy Children Through Prevention

KCEP-FM and Health Services are divisions of the Economic Opportunity Board of Clark County (EOB), a private nonprofit organization providing social services to disadvantaged southern Nevadans. The two collaborated with six partners from the community (Clark County SAFE KIDS Coalition, University Medical Center Burn Unit, the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, Clark County Fire Department, Clark County Health District, and District 4N Lions Club) to produce and execute four childhood health campaigns whose purpose is to reduce incidence by raising awareness.
Each campaign focused on a health condition that disproportionately affects children in the predominately African-American KCEP community: sickle-cell disease, scald and burn injuries, asthma and obesity. Programming and outreach activities directly and effectively impacted the target audience of 110,600 culturally diverse weekly listeners, 85 percent of whom are low-income.
For each of the four issues, a 60-minute live call-in program was produced, featuring medical experts discussing the illness/injury, emphasizing prevention and treatment, and taking questions from callers. Brief but powerful life experience stories from victims of the conditions were interspersed throughout.
Outreach activities included bringing essential prevention and treatment information and materials reinforcing the wellness messages into the community. Young students participated through class activities and Parent Days, and child performers provided health- and safety-related entertainment. Involving children helped empower them, while getting the messages to parents.
From the number of program listeners and callers, the testimonies of callers, the number of distributed information and gifts, and completed listener surveys, KCEP was able to evaluate how the campaign made a difference in their community.
