Bringing Up Baby
Maryville, MO, 1998
During the spring and summer of 1998, KXCV and KRNW presented six half-hour reports on infant health care, called Bringing Up Baby. This project involved many partner organizations, including the NW Missouri Regional Council of Governments, Community Solution for Rural Health of Nodaway County, Heartland Regional Community Foundation, and NWMSU Center for Applied Research.
Our goals were to:
- promote awareness about infant health care issues;
- help area health organizations and promote the availability of their services; and
- offer health-related events that would have a positive impact on the community.
Each month a different issue was examined through programming and community outreach events focusing on prenatal and early infant care, nutrition and infants, immunizations, when the disaster of a child's serious illness strikes, child abuse, and early childhood education and in-home safety.
KXCV and KRNW provided up to 90 minutes of broadcast time each month on each of the topics. A half-hour report aired twice on the first Friday of each month, examining that month's particular topic. The long-form reports aired during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. In addition, news features were aired in the days leading up to the extended reports.
The outreach events were meant to highlight the topics we covered. Some were simple, such as helping bring in a speaker to talk about the importance of immunizations, or making a donation to an auction that supports families with children suffering major health problems. Other events took a great deal of coordination, such as a food drive in conjunction with our report on infants and nutrition. Our biggest effort was a health fair, held at an indoor mall in Maryville. More than 300 people took part in the event, and we received many compliments from local organizations that participated, who said the fair helped them contact people who could take advantage of their services.
